Carbon dioxide studies

Already since 2006, with the launch of our energy efficiency campaign, the Cycle Michael program, we have been asserting that old, energy-hungry appliances consume much more than new, energy-efficient, modern machines. Well, but how much more? To find this out, in 2009 we called in an internationally renowned market research company, GFK Hungária Kft., and looked at what the numbers say!

We ourselves were shocked by the results!

In fact, we observed that 43% of large household appliances in Hungarian households were over 8 years old, but these appliances were responsible for ¾ of all consumption! Since then, we have conducted the survey regularly in several years – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 – to follow how much the situation has changed: how old our devices are and how much they consume.

As can be seen from the graph, if all large appliances (refrigerators, freezers, washing machines) over 8 years old in Hungary were replaced by modern machines, we could achieve a reduction of more than 1.2 million tons of CO2 emissions. This is a huge theoretical potential! The main objective of the fight against climate change and global warming is to reduce CO2 emissions, and one of the tools is to find solutions to increase energy efficiency.

This is exactly what the sub-program for the replacement of large household appliances of the Warm Home Program was built on in recent years (2014 – 2019). In this program, the very aim was to stop households from using very old, very high-consumption “Methuselahs”, which are no longer worth using from an environmental point of view.
